Snowmobile Tips for Beginners

At Lofty Peaks Adventures LLC in Utah, we know snowmobiles and everything else that goes with this incredible sport. However, not everyone knows what they need to. If you’re interested in snowmobiling but you’re just learning, there are some core basics you should be aware of—whether you’re just a young beginner or an adult. Keep Warm First of all, you’ll need some good snowmobiling gear to keep the cold out. We recommend a DOT-approved helmet that is warm, has vents, and has a visor that won’t fog up. You’ll need snow pants, a snowmobile jacket (this is a specialty jacket that’s different from regular jackets), a balaclava, gloves and a second pair in case the first get wet, a hat in case you need to pull over, wool socks and an extra pair. This all might sound like a lot, but trust us…when you’re snowmobiling, you’ll be glad to be snug and able to keep the biting cold out.

Know Hand Signals Using hand signals is a great way to communicate with others while riding a snowmobile. It’s easy, reliable, and safe. Just be sure to be very clear with your hand signals, using your left arm since that’s the arm that’s best visible to other drivers. You can check out snowmobile hand signals here. Know and Obey Signs When a sign says “No Snowmobiles” on a trail, obey it! This is telling you not to enter a restricted area or trail that is closed to access, and there’s always a good reason. An orange diamond means that you’re on a designated trail, and a blue diamond means that there is a trail for cross-country skiing and you need to stay off of it. Obeying these signs will help prevent serious accidents.

Watch Out for Other Riders Whether you’re riding alone, in a group, or with a passenger, this is one of the most important things to remember as a rider. In a group, following too closely is a common cause of snowmobile crashes. These crashes can be very dangerous, so remember to never follow too closely. When riding in a group on trails, ride single file—never side-by-side. Night Riding Riding at night is not recommended for new snowmobile riders; however, these are good tips to have in mind for the future. Be absolutely sure that your snowmobile’s headlight, taillight, and brake light are all working before you head out to ride. While riding, check them often and keep them clear of snow and ice buildup. Always reduce your speeds when riding at night since there is wildlife that may pop out and you won’t have as much visibility as you do in the daytime. Other Things to Remember Keep in mind that carrying a passenger on your snowmobile will change the center of gravity and affect your ability to steer. Never go faster than being in control of your snowmobile. If you get stuck, let off on the throttle instead of revving the engine. Revving typically causes a snowmobile to sink even further in the snow. And above all, know the law, use common sense, and be aware of your surroundings.
