3 Things to Know About Small Engine Maintenance

Did you know that Lofty Peaks Adventure LLC provides small engine repairs? That’s right — in addition to snowmobiles and ATVs, we service, maintain, and repair all types of small engines. If you own equipment or tools that run on small engines, you may often find yourself with an engine that is sputtering, smoking, or not working at all. Below is some information that may be helpful as you troubleshoot your small engine equipment.

1. Types of Small Engines

There are two classes of small engines — two-stroke and four-stroke. Both engines work the same way, but two-stroke engines create power in two stages, and four-stroke engines go through four stages to create the same type of power. Both engines use either gasoline or diesel fuel. Two-stroke engines can be found in leaf blowers, chainsaws, small outboard motors, and mopeds. Lawnmowers, generators, and pumps are examples of equipment with four-stroke engines. Both snowmobiles and ATVs use two-stroke or four-stroke engines.

2. Troubleshooting Issues

Try these troubleshooting tips if you’re experiencing problems with your small engine equipment:
  • The oil and fuel should be fresh as dirty fuel will not allow the engine to work properly. Both fluids should also be filled to their maximum levels.
  • A smoking engine could mean a dirty air filter, bad fuel, or a flooded carburetor. Check these components to see if any of these issues are the source of the problem.
  • An engine that won’t start may be a sign of disconnected or dirty spark plugs. If those are working correctly, then there may be a problem with the ignition system.
  • If the tips above don’t solve the dilemma, there could be a larger issue that involves lubrication, compression, air, or fuel.

3. Repair or Replace

Once you’ve discovered the problem, it’s time to decide if the engine needs to be repaired or replaced. Engines that are older or have major issues may need to be rebuilt, whereas newer engines or those with minor problems can typically be repaired. If you’re unsure, make an appointment at a small engine repair shop where they can diagnose the issue and offer their professional advice on whether to repair or replace it.
